Is your horse overdue for vaccinations?

When was the last time they received a booster?

Southwest Equine is actively encouraging preventative health medicine for the wider equine population. This is why we are encouraging the implementation of annual health checks as well as regular vaccinations. Keep reading to find out about our special offer!

Why should I vaccinate?

Tetanus

Tetanus is a fatal disease that is caused by an organism that is found within the soil. Wounds or abrasions allow entry of this organism into your animal, which then releases deadly spores causing disease and death. This disease is not contagious, which means that your horse can contract this disease even if they never leave the paddock! Horses often do not respond to treatment once they have become infected, so preventative vaccination is the only means of protecting your horse from this disease.

Strangles

Strangles is a highly contagious disease which results in high fevers, snotty nose, and swollen lymph nodes, which can sometimes create abscesses. This disease will quickly spread through a susceptible horse population so ensuring your horse is vaccinated is essential. It is not often fatal in adult horses but can cause severe illness whilst the horse is infected as well as being contagious to other horses.

Worming

Equest® Plus Tape contains moxidectin which is the only anthelmintic drug to control ‘encysted’ small stronglyes in a single dose. Small strongyles are the most common equine intestinal parasite in Australia and affects horses of all ages. This is why South West Equine recommends all horses be treated with Equest Plus Tape at least twice per year.
